I want start this series because a hotel is a place full of stories.
There are many people ever living there, and happens many things.
That would be an interesting topic.

The Grand Budapest Hotel comes from the movie- The Grand Budapest Hotel.

The film was shot in Germany, and the story background is Austria between 1918 and 1938. That was the period after worldwar I and before worldwar II.

Where is the Grand Budapest Hotel?

The Grand Budapest hotel was not a real hotel. It is fictional.
However the shooting location is a real place.
It was temporarily converted from an old shopping mall for filming purposes.
This old shopping center is located in Goerlitz, Germany.

the story happens in a fictional country name Zubrowka. But the director(Wes Anderson) ever said openly that he was effected by the fiction written by Stefan Zweig. We all knows Austria is actually the place where Stefan Zweig born and loved. So it is widely believed that the fictional country in the film is actually the real world Austria.

The inside part of Grand Budapest hotel is actuall come from the shopping mall Kaufhaus Görlitz, in Germany.
Hotel Imperial in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic was a references to the look of Grand Budapest hotel

The film’s scenic designer Adam Stockhausen made a model of the appearance of the hotel by referring to the appearance of many European hotels, including the above-mentioned hotel imperial.

the hotel’s facade is not real exsted. It is just a model in real world

Although the hotel is called Budapest, the movie doesn’t seem to have anything to do with Budapest, and Hungary.

What’s the story about?

The story tells the rise and fall of a hotel in Eastern Europe from the end of World War I to the end of World War II.
The Grand Budapest Hotel is located on a high mountain, the dream and unreal beauty, will take everyone into a lost fairy tale world.  At the beginning of the 20th century, there were many ways of illness and recuperation in Europe, and the wealthy usually chose the way of recuperation and vacation, and the Grand Budapest Hotel just met the appeal of this kind of wealthy people.  So he was the beginning of prosperity and dreams, and the devastation of the war later made Budapest decline.

..

Who is Stefan Zweig?

Stefan Zweig is not a actor or character in the Grand Budapest Hotel. He is the spirit of it.

In the end of th film there is a statement.

This says that the idea for the film came from Stefan Zweig. Actually the country in film is the hometown of Stefan Zweig.

Stefan Zweig-Austrian novelist, poet, playwright and biographer.
He was born in a wealthy Jewish family, Zweig studied philosophy and literature in Vienna and Berlin in when he was young.
Later years he traveled the world, meeting and being influenced by the likes of Romain Rolland and Freud.
He worked against the war during the First World War and was deported by the Nazis in 1934 and went into exile in England and Brazil.  He committed suicide in Brazil in 1942.

Zweig’s writtings often depict the traditional aristocratic and sophisticated life of Europe

this is the life that Zweig always aspire to, however the Male lead Mr. Gustave didn’t enjoy such life long time, he was shot by fascist in the end of film.

Followings are his famous writings

Is the Grand Budapest hotel luxurious?

Yes, The evidence is certain.

Very delicate elevator, the early elevator needed a special person to operate

Swimming pool and Bathing house.
The pool is small because the early spa pools in Europe were not big.

“Only the person who has experienced light and darkness, war and peace, rise and fall, only that person has truly experienced life.” ~ Stefan Zweig
